Life Insurance & IUL Strategy in South Carolina

We are licensed in South Carolina and we are about twenty minutes from the line. To us, Rock Hill and Fort Mill are not another state; they are the other side of Lake Wylie, and the drive is shorter than crossing Charlotte at five o’clock.

From Chaka

The border is a line on a map, not a real thing

A big share of the households I work with in York County live in South Carolina and work in North Carolina. Their kids go to school on one side and their paycheque comes from the other. Nobody thinks of themselves as living in a different market; and neither do I.

Being licensed on both sides means I do not have to hand you off when you move fifteen minutes down the road, which people around here do constantly.

  • York County is Charlotte’s back yardRock Hill, Fort Mill, Tega Cay and Lake Wylie have absorbed years of Charlotte spillover. Same commute, same employers, different state on the license.
  • The Upstate runs on manufacturingGreenville and Spartanburg are automotive and advanced manufacturing country. Shift work, strong benefits at the big plants, thinner coverage at the smaller suppliers.
  • The coast is a retirement conversationA lot of the Charleston, Summerville and Myrtle Beach calls we take start the same way. Someone retired here from somewhere colder, their employer life insurance ended with the job, and they need to know what replaces it.
  • Two states, one planCross-border households are the norm here. Coverage follows the person, not the commute; and we hold licenses on both sides of that line.

What's different about South Carolina

The Upstate is a short drive, not a trip

Rock Hill, Fort Mill and York County are effectively local for us. Charleston, Columbia and Greenville we handle by video, which most people prefer anyway; nobody has to burn a half-day of PTO.

Employer coverage that just ended

It is the most common opening line we hear in South Carolina. Group life almost always ends when the job does, and finding that out at 63 is a very different problem than finding it out at 43. Both are solvable, just not with the same product.

We will tell you if term is the answer

Some people need the biggest death benefit for the smallest premium, over a fixed number of years. The death benefit is the amount paid to your family, and if that is the whole job, term insurance is the answer. We will write you term and say so. Not everything is an IUL and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Two very different conversations

Most people arrive wanting one of these. They are not the same product and they are not for the same person, so we will tell you which one fits.

Indexed Universal Life (IUL)

For South Carolina households building long-term, tax-advantaged wealth on top of protection, with a 5 to 7 year horizon at minimum.

  • Balanced Uncapped Index Account; 113% participation, 0.75% floor on the indexed credit
  • Blended across S&P 500, Fidelity SMID Multifactor Index, Nikkei 225
  • Access designed to be income-tax-free when properly structured
  • Death benefit in force from day one

Not right for everyone. If you have no emergency fund, or you are not yet capturing your full employer 401(k) match, do those first, we will say so.

How the IUL works

Final Expense Coverage

For South Carolina families who want the funeral and the last bills handled so nobody has to fundraise during a week they should be grieving.

  • Coverage from $1,000 to $50,000, ages 0 to 85
  • Most applicants qualify with health questions and no medical exam
  • Guaranteed issue where health is a barrier, and it is worth knowing what that means: the full amount is not payable in the first two years. Most people do not need it, because a few health questions get them day one coverage instead. How to tell which one you are looking at
  • Premium locks at the rate you qualify for and does not increase

For context: the median funeral with a viewing and burial in the South Atlantic region runs about $8,023, and with cremation about $6,103. Source: National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) General Price List Study, 2023. These are regional medians across many providers. They are not a quote, and not what any particular funeral home in South Carolina will charge you. Ask them directly, and ask for the itemized price list they are required to give you.

Straightforward, quick, and a completely different conversation from wealth building. Plenty of our SC clients only ever need this.

  • Brother Chaka is very knowledgeable and works within your budget. He takes his time and converses with you about your needs and goals to make sure you get what is best for you and your family. He does not try and force anything on you. He reviewed some of my other policies and educated me on their gaps. Working with him I feel like I made a well informed decision.
