Life Insurance & IUL Strategy in Florida

Florida is where a lot of the country comes to retire, and that shapes most of the conversations we have here. The question is often what replaces the life insurance that ended with a job up north.

  • One Floridian in five is 65 or olderCensus figures put Florida well above the national share of residents 65 and up. Final expense is a large part of our work here, because a lot of families are planning for it now.
  • No state income taxFlorida has no personal income tax. A pension, a paycheck or a retirement account goes further here, and the question becomes where the next dollar does the most good.
  • The coverage stayed up northPlenty of retirees here had group life through a job in another state. It ended with the job, often in the same year they moved.
  • One family, spread across the stateGrandparents near Tampa, children in Orlando, cousins in Jacksonville. Everything we do works by video and phone, so the whole family can be on one call.

What's different about Florida

Final expense, settled while you can

Most applicants qualify on a few health questions, with no medical exam, and the premium is locked at the rate they qualify for. The funeral is handled before anybody has to ask.

Replace what retirement took away

The day the job ended, the group life usually went with it. We look at what your family still depends on and write coverage you own to cover it.

Something left for the grandchildren

Some Florida families are past protecting an income and want to leave something behind. A death benefit paid to a named beneficiary is income-tax-free under IRC section 101(a) and passes outside probate.

Two very different conversations

Most people arrive wanting one of these. They are not the same product and they are not for the same person, so we will tell you which one fits.

Indexed Universal Life (IUL)

For Florida households building long-term, tax-advantaged wealth on top of protection. It works best with an outlook of at least five to seven years.

  • Uncapped Index Account; 113% participation, current and set by the carrier, and a 0.75% floor on the indexed credit. Participation rates and caps are at the carrier’s discretion and can change.
  • Blended across S&P 500, Fidelity SMID Multifactor Index, Nikkei 225
  • Access designed to be income-tax-free when properly structured
  • Death benefit in force from day one

Not right for everyone. If you have no emergency fund yet, build that first, and we will say so.

How the IUL works

Final Expense Coverage

For Florida families who want the funeral and the last bills handled so nobody has to fundraise during a week they should be grieving.

  • Coverage from $1,000 to $100,000, ages 0 to 85
  • Most applicants qualify with health questions and no medical exam
  • Guaranteed issue where health is a barrier, and it is worth knowing what that means: the full amount is not payable in the first two years. Most people do not need it, because a few health questions get them day one coverage instead. How to tell which one you are looking at
  • Premium locks at the rate you qualify for and does not increase

A full burial, with the funeral home and the cemetery together, runs $13,795 to $28,995, about $21,400 on average. The funeral home's part alone, in the South Atlantic region, has a median of about $8,023, or about $6,103 with cremation. Source: National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) General Price List Study, 2023. These are regional medians across many providers. They are not a quote, and not what any particular funeral home in Florida will charge you. Ask them directly, and ask for the itemized price list they are required to give you.

Straightforward, quick, and a completely different conversation from wealth building. Plenty of our FL clients only ever need this.
